After nearly seven years leading the Marion Police Department, Chief John Clair is preparing to step into a new role as the police chief for the Town of Blacksburg.
Clair will continue serving in Marion through the end of the month. His departure marks the conclusion of a tenure characterized by significant reform, renewed public confidence, and a strong focus on both professional development and community connection.
Clair joined the force in 2018, following the retirement of former chief Rex Anders. He relocated to the area from Northern Virginia, where he had grown weary of the fast-paced urban environment. At the time, he was serving as the police chief in Quantico and had prior experience with the Prince William County Police Department.
Clair took the reins at a time when the department was still working to rebuild trust following earlier scandals that had affected local law enforcement’s reputation. From the outset, restoring credibility with the community became a central focus of his leadership.
Those who worked alongside him credit Clair with bringing a renewed sense of purpose and professionalism to the department. Officers under his command were encouraged to engage more actively with residents through events like National Night Out. Partnerships with local organizations, such as the Marion VFW Post 4667, also played a role in recognizing outstanding police work across the county.
One of Clair’s key initiatives was promoting transparency and accountability. He implemented strict standards for conduct and emphasized ongoing training and leadership development. Under his leadership, the department secured more than $300,000 in federal funds to bring in advanced training opportunities and modern policing practices.
As Clair prepares to take on his new position in Blacksburg, those in Marion believe his impact will continue to be felt. Officers have expressed confidence that the values and practices he championed will remain central to the department’s mission moving forward.
The Town of Marion will begin the search for a new police chief in the coming weeks.
