As we go into this new year, I ask for your advice, your counsel, your information, your suggestions. And for Christians, I ask for your prayer. Scripture says that “where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.” (Prov 11:14)
With multiple advisors, I may not always follow *your* advice exactly as you recommended, but I will always consider it. There may be other factors I can’t speak about, and if you knew, you may change your advice. And sometimes I may follow your advice exactly as you gave it, but it may be in closed meetings where you don’t see.
I’m a regular guy. Some of the issues the City Council has to deal with are difficult and complex. I need help. Please help me, and please be patient with me.
I may follow your suggestions with discussion. My intent isn’t to argue, but to understand your perspective better, and to help you understand my (or someone else’s) perspective better. Even if I disagree with your conclusion, I want to know how you got there. I may disagree with the other side even when I don’t explicitly say so, but I want to help you understand where they are coming from. And I have a limited perspective, and I want to understand all angles and all aspects the best I can.
I represent you, the people of Bristol. I will always consider your advice, and I will incorporate it the best I can.
And again for the Christians who read this page, please pray for understanding in complex situations, insight when I may not know or be told everything, and wisdom on how to act, how to decide, and ideally how to be proactive in the first place.
