In an emotional and unanticipated moment during the August 4 Marion Town Council meeting, a group of citizens formally recognized and commend Mayor Avery Cornett for his leadership, transparency, and service to the Town of Marion.

The resolution was read aloud and presented by Marion resident Bennett Hutton, an Army veteran and resident of Marion. The presentation came during the public comment portion of the meeting and left the mayor visibly moved.

As the final words of the resolution were spoken, the entire audience rose to their feet in a standing ovation, offering heartfelt applause in support of the mayor and the message conveyed. The moment brought about a sense of unity and emotion.
“Thank you very much it’s an honor” Mayor Cornett said, clearly surprised by this presentation. He quickly called the meeting back to order and later the next day, indicated that he had not been prepared for this but he was very appreciative of the gesture and planned to display it in his office.

RESOLUTION OF COMMENDATION
Presented to Mayor Avery Cornett
August 4, 2025

WHEREAS, the citizens of Marion recognize and appreciate the dedicated service of Mayor Avery Cornett, whose leadership has been marked by integrity, courage, and an unwavering commitment to the well-being of this community; and

WHEREAS, Mayor Cornett has served the people of Marion with integrity, fairness, and a deep respect for the office he holds, consistently upholding the values of ethical governance and public trust; and

WHEREAS, Mayor Cornett has remained steadfast in his representation of all citizens, advocating for the needs and concerns of individuals across Marion, while remaining accessible, accountable, and responsive to the people he serves; and

WHEREAS, Mayor Cornett has demonstrated remarkable resolve in addressing difficult and complex issues, even when such efforts have been met with resistance, showing courage, clarity, and an unwavering focus on doing what is right for the community; and

WHEREAS, the example set by Mayor Cornett stands as a model of principled leadership, civic responsibility, and genuine public service;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that we, the citizens of Marion, do hereby express our sincere appreciation and commendation to Mayor Avery Cornett for his outstanding leadership, tireless dedication, and the lasting contributions he has made to the Town of Marion; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be presented to Mayor Cornett as a symbol of our collective gratitude and deep respect for his enduring service to our community.
